Choosing the Right Hair Curling and Straightening Products

Today’s hair care products provide us with many options for styling. Weren’t born with curls? No problem. There is a curling iron out there for you. Born with too many curls or a big head of frizz? Still not a problem with today’s straightening irons. The only problem you may have is choosing the iron that’s right for you. This article will give you some tips because the hair care aisle is getting trickier every day.

For you girls (or guys) with straight hair who dream of having wild, springing curls, there are a number of choices for you to consider. First, you can choose the barrel size which is determined by the length of your hair or hair layers or the type of curls you want. For example, if you have long hair and want spiral curls, you would buy a very small barrel. Using a smaller barrel forces your hair to wrap around a number of times and you end up with pretty little bouncy spirals. However, if you prefer a nice smooth wave, then you would want to purchase a larger barrel; something that the hair may wrap around a time or two or that you could use nearer the scalp to put just a little body at the root.

If your hair is in short layers, you might choose a medium size barrel that would give your hair some oomph or help the layers to blend into one another.

There are even different shapes of barrels; triangles and ovals which give you different shapes of spiral curls.

If it’s difficult to get your hair around a curling iron and make it stay there, try a curling brush. It’s the same concept but with bristles that grip your hair just like a brush would. I remember these being very popular in the 70s when everyone wanted “Farrah hair." They’re also a great tool for permed or thick hair.

If you have curly hair and dream of shiny straight tresses, there is an iron for you, too. Straightening irons have been very popular for the past few years. We watched the gals on the reality shows using them to tame their manes and we all wanted them, too. Straightening irons come small or large and can iron a few strands at a time or a handful.

Today’s ceramic irons are recommended for less damage to the hair. Because the ceramic gives off infrared heat, the hair is curled more quickly and spends less time in direct contact with the iron. This means less frying, more shining!

Tourmaline is another material used in flattening irons and works the same way as ceramic. Tourmaline is particularly smooth and won’t snag the hair, resulting in a silky shine.

If you like to change your style often, that’s ok. Many companies package multiple irons in different sizes, shapes and materials. You can choose the 2" barrel and have a nice smooth wave for the opera on Monday night and change it up on Thursday night for a ¼" barrel and have many spirals to bounce around on the dance floor. Friday night, go out as a silky diva after using a ceramic flattening iron.

There are so many options that you need never have the same hairstyle twice.

You can spend a lot of money on the latest hair cut or color but if you don’t take care of it at home, it still looks like the same old hair. Adding a little curl or a nice straight set of bangs can really make a difference in your overall look.

Curlers and straighteners and everything in between are considerably less expensive than many treatments you can receive at the salon and you don’t have to keep a style that doesn’t suit you. Just wash it and start over. It’s fun, fashionable and affordable.
