You don’t have to practice magic to create an atmosphere of magical serenity. You can turn any room in your house into a tranquil sanctuary where you can meditate or just plain relax in any manner you choose.

Scent, color and sound affect us on subtle levels of which most are not even aware. We tend to associate certain colors with particular moods, emotions or properties. For example, blue may be associated with peace, protection and serenity. Green is commonly linked to fertility, prosperity, growth and healing. Red usually brings to mind love, sex and passion. Black and white are neutral with black signifying absence of color or light and white being the embodiment of the entire color spectrum.

Scents can have a calming or stimulating effect. We know how the sweet fragrance of a rose makes us feel or how the clean, refreshing scent that fills the air following a spring rain can give us a sense of renewal. Scents such as lavender and vanilla can calm and soothe whereas scents such as cinnamon and jasmine can invigorate.

I love using scented candles to enhance my home environment because they provide the elements of both color and scent. The other day I went shopping and to my delight found that the store was having a sale on candles. Well of course I couldn’t resist. I just had to splurge by adding some of these treasures to my shopping cart. I went home with candles in such wonderful scents as watermelon, apple cinnamon, vanilla, Carmel candy, maple syrup and more. I also returned home with lavender and jasmine essential oils. Each room was filled with a different delight.

Candles can be great for a romantic evening with that special someone, entertaining dinner guests or just a quiet night at home relaxing. The use of candles has been extensive and varied. Not only have they been used for light and to enhance the mood of romance but also in magic rituals, religious ceremony and to honor the memory of those we’ve lost. Candles continue to used in these ways and many more. Indeed, it seems as if they contain a magic of their own.

Sound affects our emotions as well as do color and scent. Music for instance can soothe, stimulate, excite or relax. Some people enjoy listening to certain instrumentals while relaxing while others claim that soft music helps them drift off to sleep. Regardless of personal preference, certain types of music have been said to calm, relieve stress, lift spirits and even lower blood pressure. Of course the same could be said for any calming environment. The sound of silence is also very welcoming for many of us since silence is not often found in a society that barely slows down enough to sleep. Nature sounds and the sound of soft falling rain are examples of other soothing sounds.

Creating an environment of peaceful serenity is the basis for using tools such as candles, scents and sounds to balance the stress of daily living. With more progressive technology and conveniences at our disposal, it is ironic that it is the simple things that provide the most relief and gift us with a temporary haven of peace.

If you choose to create a serene home environment through the use of candles please remember to take proper precautionary measures to ensure safety and prevents burns or fire. Although it is common sense, safety can never be stressed enough. Always be certain candles are placed far away from drapes or flammable materials. Make sure they are placed on sturdy surfaces in fireproof containers where they will not easily be knocked over. Keep them out of reach of children and pets. Never leave candles unattended. Always remember to extinguish lit candles before going to bed or leaving the house. Use candles safely and enjoy your magical sanctuary.
