Beatrix Potter’s storybook characters adorned my daughter’s room before she could say, “Peter Rabbit". The adorable porcelain figurines and animated music boxes seemed almost magical in the world of picture books and cuddly stuffed animals that lined the shelves and perched on the window seat in her room. A particular favorite was a musical stuffed Jemima Puddleduck whose head moved in counter clockwise motion when the toy was wound. Magical, like every little girl’s room should be.

The author of the most popular children’s book series strayed away from the realistic animals depicted by her counterparts, such as Ernest Thompson Seton, and created a wonderful world of clothed animals with silly names and human personality traits. Since his first appearance in 1902, both children and adults alike fell in love with the mischievous Peter Rabbit and his vast array of acquaintances. Everyone seemed to identify with his knack of getting into trouble, and he soon became one of the most beloved characters of all time.

It is no wonder that Potter’s designs have remained popular for over 100 years! Royal Doulton, Royal Albert and Beswick have all reproduced her work in fine porcelain figurines that have graced many nurseries throughout the years. But it’s not just children that enjoy this décor.

Christmas at Clermont State Historical Site in Hudson, NY was celebrated with a Beatrix Potter theme this year, in honor of the 100th year anniversary of two of Potter’s most popular books, BENJAMIN BUNNY and TWO BAD MICE. The mansion was adorned with scenes from her books, including a large Christmas tree decorated like Mr. McGregor’s garden, complete with Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit stealing from him once again.

Achieving the Beatrix Potter look for your child’s room is getting easier each year, as more and more products become available. The popular Wallies brand wallpaper squares have added Peter Rabbit and friends to their collection. Complete crib sets, bedspreads, pillows, lamps and rugs are available from many different sources. Retail stores, such as JC Penneys and Sears carry a wide array of products. The line has become so popular that there are usually close to 3000 items up for auction on eBay. Many internet stores carry Beatrix Potter collectibles and home décor items. Simply use a search engine, type in the name and page after page of resources becomes available.

From fluffy pillows and bedspreads to night lights and framed prints, likenesses of Mrs Tiggy Winkle, Miss Moppet, Samuel Whiskers and Peter Rabbit can transform your child’s bedroom into a fantasy suite of woodland animals. Let her imagination run wild, just like Beatrix Potter’s did 100 years ago. Maybe your little one will have her own line of storybook characters someday and generations from now will be decorating with her designs!
