Decorative house flags have become the new way to brighten up your yard, year-round. Not only do they offer bright spots of color in the dull days of early winter and early Spring, but they add a dashing touch to the colors of summer and Fall, that surround your home.
Choosing where to hang your flags, is one of the first considerations, as you’ll have to obtain the proper bracket and fixtures. There is also a wide selection of materials for the brackets, so you aren’t limited to plain aluminum or iron.
Brackets for decorative house flags come in a variety of styles to display them in just the way they should hang to be appreciated. You can purchase a basic bracket that screws into a wall, side of the garage, doorframe, etc., and holds the flag at a 45-degree angle, the standard position. However, if you want more flexibility in where and how you hang your flags, you may opt for a fixed bracket, which has two holders that will extend the flag horizontally, or at a 45-degree angle. Top of the line, are brackets that can be positioned at any angle you like, and can be adjusted to keep the pole in that particular setting. Then you are free to change the angle, when you change your flag, to lower or raise it according to a special occasion, or to change the positions according to the season or occasion that the flag represents.
You can purchase the bracket and pole separately, according to what materials you want it made out of, and which bracket offers you the ideal position for your flags. For instance, if the exterior of your home is dark, you might not want the aluminum bracket. A good choice would be cast iron, which is often very decorative, with a design worked around the base, or raised in bas relief on the surface. On the other hand, if the exterior of your home is very light or white, it’s possible to get brackets in aluminum, which come in white, and you can then choose the pole you like best to present your decorative flags.
The pole you buy can be important, particularly if it will undergo weather extremes from being outside year round, or if it catches the wind. Depending on the exterior coloring of your home, you might like the natural look of wood. Be sure it is varnished well to survive the outdoors, and check to see how firmly anchored the decorative ball at the end is. Other options are aluminum, and the higher quality of fiberglass, which may have more durability. Also, remember to take into consideration the size of your flags, when choosing the standard lengths of five or six feet. The better quality poles offer a plastic sleeve-like covering that helps to avoid tangling of the flag when it’s windy.
The placement of your pole and bracket, depends largely on where you want your decorative house flags to be seen at their best. If you want to show your patriotic pride to all, or welcome people coming to your home, the front of the house or beside the steps or front door will display them to advantage. But mounting them on an end wall beside the driveway, or on the wall facing the backyard, can also provide visitors and family alike with a delightful dash of seasonal color.
Decide what best fits your taste and decor. If full sized decorative flags do not suit your needs then there are also smaller garden flags that can be placed on mailboxes or in your vegetable garden - many with the same themes are the larger flags.
